South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) and Lakes parish council have put forward £270,000 for the scheme at Waterhead lake frontage which includes a ferry pier, a mix of hotels and guesthouses, a youth hostel, pub, shops and cafes.
Waterhead is also one of the few public access points on the eastern shore of the Lake.

The Great Lake District Swim Challenge

Diving into Windermere17 Lakes, 4 Days, 1 Lake District

The Great Lake District Swim Challenge is set to establish the Lake District as the UK adventure capital for outdoor swimmers.

A New Safety Code for Swimmers in the Lake District

swimmer with floatThe “be keen to be seen” message follows negotiations between groups of lake users as open water swimming attracts a massive new following.

Thousands of people now take a plunge in the lakes, tarns and rivers every year.

The new swim-safe code spells out a hat, flag, float and boat message designed to make the Lakes a safer place for all users.

Working with event organisers, open water swim providers, commercial boat operators and Windermere Lake Users Forum, the Lake District National Park has produced 10,000 leaflets spelling out how swimmers can protect themselves from boat collisions and serious harm.

Lake District Wild Swimming Expert Stars in BBC Countryfile

Pete Kelly and Matt Baker Share a JokeAmbleside wild swimming expert Pete Kelly is to star in the flagship BBC TV show Countryfile,  in a Lakeland tarn with no wetsuit.

Pete took a dive into the chilly waters of Blea Tarn for the BBC cameras for a show which will be transmitted this Sunday Feb 9.

He was demonstrating how training can prepare the body for swimming in ultra-cold water, to test the “body-shock” theory for presenter Matt Baker.

Lake District Lake for Sale

for-saleFancy owning your own Lake to indulge your passion for open water swimming?

Here’s your chance, if you have around £300,000. Esthwaite Water in the Lake District is up for sale.

Esthwaite Water is a privately owned lake which has been run as a fishery for many years and swimming is not currently allowed.

The Lake does have other attractions such as the nature trail and fishing boat safaris, perhaps its biggest attraction for fishermen, not swimmers, is it's claim to fame for England’s largest pike catch at 46.5lLbs. (Gulp!)

Whats in it for the open water swimmer?
