Duncan Goodhew is as instantly recognisable as he is charming; having swum with Duncan in Windermere before, he was kind enough to stop for a chat at the Great North Swim 2012.

Duncan Goodhew won his Gold medal for Great Britain in the 100m breaststroke at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games; he was a ‘star’ of the generation and hasn't stopped using winning ways to benefit others.

Swim Ambassador

Duncan is a British Gas Swim ambassador inspiring youngsters to take up the sport.

Last time I met Duncan he was helping to promote our local Troutbeck Swimming pool in Cumbria, which serves a rural community. Sadly since then the pool has closed and the community now faces a 30 mile round trip to the nearest public pool.

Duncan expressed his surprise and concern over the pools closure  'it really is a shame the pool closed,  I hope it can be redeveloped, it is in a great location and the demand for local swimming facilities is clear, especially in an area so well regarded for its Lakes'.

Swimathon President, Duncan, was very interested in the open water swimming club which organised a swimathon in Windermere for the Swimathon Weekend at the end of April and praised our efforts.

It’s great to see so many people taking to open water, many for their first time’ he said. ‘Swimming wetsuits and swim gear is so good now that it makes open water swimming and events like the great swim series much more accessible’.
